About Tallow & FAQ

All About Tallow for Skincare

What is Tallow?

Tallow is fat of an animal that’s been rendered and separated from impurities. Used for centuries, tallow is known for its rich, nourishing properties, making it a prized ingredient in traditional skincare. After being carefully rendered, tallow closely mirrors the composition of human skin oils, allowing it to absorb effectively and help maintain healthy, hydrated skin.

At Earth Made, we use grass-fed, grass-finished, local cows for tallow. This ensures that our products are made with the highest quality and sustainably sourced fat for your skin.

Why Tallow for Skin?

Tallow has a unique profile of fatty acids that is similar to human sebum. This allows our skin to more effectively absorb tallow and utilize it as a moisturizer.

Main Fatty Acids:

  • Oleic Acid- deeply moisturizing, helps nutrient absorption
  • Palmitic Acid- protects the skin barrier
  • Stearic Acid- softens and strengthens skin
  • Conjugated Linoleic Acid- anti-inflammatory & antimicrobial
  • Palmitoleic Acid- antimicrobial, supports healing

***Tallow may also contain vitamins such as A, D, E and K which is an added benefit of tallow. Every batch of tallow is different because every cow is different.***

Is Tallow Suitable for All Skin Types?

Tallow is generally well-tolerated by most skin types including sensitive skin because it’s made from natural animal fats that are similar to the oils found in our skin it’s highly compatible and nourishing. That said, as with any skincare ingredient, it’s always a good idea to perform a patch test if you’re trying tallow for the first time, especially if you have allergies to animal-based products.
